Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are sisters with opposing temperaments – Elinor is prudent, rational and responsible; Marianne is passionate, excitable and emotional. When Marianne is abandoned by an unscrupulous suitor, she is disconsolate, driving herself to a serious illness. Elinor, meanwhile, is dealing with her own betrayal but is stoic, refusing to reveal her emotions to even those closest to her. The sisters must navigate the misery of heartbreak in a society where status and money determine the outcomes of love and marriage. And to find happiness, they must learn to accept that both sense and sensibility are intertwined.

Arms and The Man by George Bernard Shaw (Hardback)
0 out of 5(0)Arms and the Man, romantic comedy in three acts by George Bernard Shaw, produced in 1894 and published in 1898. The play is set in the Petkoff household in Bulgaria and satirizes romantic ideas concerning war and heroism. A battle-weary officer, a Swiss mercenary fighting for the Serbian army, takes refuge in Raina Petkoff’s bedchamber, where she agrees to hide him from the authorities. In response to his matter-of-fact account of the war, in which he debunks her fiancé Sergius’ heroism, Raina at first ridicules the intruder’s cowardliness but ultimately appreciates his honesty. Sometime later, after the war is over, the officer, Captain Bluntschli, returns. By the end of the play, Sergius has promised himself to the maidservant Louka, whose fiancé, the manservant Nicola, willingly forgoes his claim to her, and Raina has become engaged to Bluntschli, who has just inherited a number of Swiss hotels.
