The Psychology of Singing by David C. Taylor (H.B)
- ISBN-13 : 978-8182478985
- Dimensions : 22.5 x 14.5 x 1.5 cm
- Hardcover : 210 pages
- Edgar finalist and Nero Award winner, David C. Taylor’s first novel in the Michael Cassidy thriller Series, Night Life, was nominated for Best Novel at the Mystery Writers of America’s 2016 Edgar Awards. The ground-breaking, comprehensively rational and scientific critical analysis of modern methods of singing instruction. Probably the single most useful book on singing ever written, this work is a critical analysis which exposes the shortcomings and failures of modern methods of singing instructions. Having done so, it then proceeds to elaborate on the superseded method, namely bel canto or the so called old Italian method. The author establishes the validity of the latter method by reference to the results it obtained. He convincingly argues that the decline in the quality of singers can be arrested only by a return to the bel canto method. A peculiar gap exists between the accepted theoretical basis of instruction in singing and the actual methods of vocal teachers. Part I of this work contains a review of modern methods. In Part II a critical analysis is offered of certain theories of the vocal action which receive much attention in practical instruction. Part III contains a summary of all present knowledge of the voice. In Part IV the information about the vocal action obtained from the two sources is combined -the scientific knowledge of mechanical processes, and the empirical knowledge derived from attentive listening to voices.

The designing and making of Costume is a craft—sometimes artistic—with which we are all more or less concerned. It is also, in its own way, one of the living arts, that is, it is still carried forward experimentally by experts directly attached to the “business.” It has not yet been subjected to rules of good taste formulated by Academies and Universities; but when Inigo Jones, the great architect, was asked to make some designs for fancy dress, he based them on the Five Orders of Architecture, and ponderous fancies they were.

The recent Education Act, in its relation to instruction in Continuation Schools and Classes, makes it desirable, if nature should appear, such books dealing with the Science subjects most closely correlated to each large industry. Some knowledge of Elementary Science is essential, not only to the students of Continuation Schools and Classes, but to practically all who wish to prosecute intelligently the study of the technology of any particular branch of industry. There are very few science textbooks which refer particularly to the textile industry, and it is hoped that this book-the first of two parts on Textile Mathematics as well as other books which are to be published shortly, will supply, in part at least, this want in textile literature. The general principles involved in all preliminary books on Mathematics are identical, although these principles may be explained in different ways. The present book, while embodying these common principles, differs from the usual books on the subject in that the principles are explained sp as to appeal to textile students, while practically all the examples and exercise bear directly on the problems of textileSKU: n/a -
