Selected stories of h.g wells [hardcover] H.G. Wells
H. G. Wells’s genius reintroduces readers to his singular talent for making the unbelievable seem utterly plausible. He envisioned a sky filled with aeroplanes before Orville Wright ever left the ground. He described the spectacle of space travel decades before men set foot on the moon. H. G. Wells was a visionary, a man of science with an enduring literary touch, and his originality and inventiveness are fully on display in this essential collection. “Wells imagined both dark and bright futures because his creed allowed both while promising neither, and because the eighty years of his life were years of immense intellectual and technological accomplishment and appalling violence and destruction.n

Winner of the Newbery Award, this “enthralling and inspiring tale of triumph. . . . make[s] life in England during the Middle Ages come alive” (The New York Times). Ever since he can remember, Robin, child of Sir John de Bureford, has been told what is expected of him as the son of a nobleman. He must learn the ways of knighthood. But Robin’s destiny is changed suddenly when he falls ill and loses the use of his legs. Fearing a plague, his servants abandon him, and Robin is left alone. A monk named Brother Luke rescues Robin and takes him to the hospice of St. Mark’s, where he is taught woodcarving and patience and strength. Says Brother Luke, “Thou hast only to follow the wall far enough and there will be a door in it.” Robin learns soon enough what Brother Luke means. When the great castle of Lindsay is in danger, Robin discovers that there is more than one way to serve his king. “A poignant story, full of action, and a strongly painted canvas of the times as well.” —The New Yorker

The Entire Original Maupassant Short Stories By Guy De Maupassant (Hardcover)
0 out of 5(0)Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5, 1850 in Normandy, France. His father and mother separated when he was eleven years old and Maupassant was raised under the influence of his strong, domineering mother. Gustave Flqubert became his friend and mentor, helping him with his writing and introducing him to prestigious literary circles. Maupassant wrote six novels, three travel books, a book of verse and over 300 short stories. But in spite of his wealth and fame, he was deeply distressed as his promiscuous and colourful life had afflicted him with syphillis. He started hallucinating and in 1892 even tried to commit suicide. Confirmed to a lunatic asylum in Paris, Maupassant died on 6 July 1893.
