The Pickwick PapersThe Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (also known as The Pickwick Papers) was Charles Dickens’s first novel. He was asked to contribute to the project as an up-and-coming writer following the success of Sketches by Boz, published in 1836 (most of Dickens’ novels were issued in shilling instalments before being published as complete volumes). Dickens (still writing under the pseudonym of Boz) increasingly took over the unsuccessful monthly publication after the original illustrator Robert Seymour had committed suicide. With the introduction of Sam Weller in chapter 10, the book became the first real publishing phenomenon, with bootleg copies, theatrical performances, Sam Weller joke books, and other merchandise. After the publication, the widow of Robert Seymour claimed that the idea for the novel was originally her husband’s however, in his preface to the 1867 edition, Dickens strenuously denied any specific input, writing that “Mr Seymour never originated or suggested an incident, a phrase, or a word, to be found in the book.”Editorial ReviewsReviewCharles Dickens’ first novel, The Pickwick Papers was first published in 1836.Samuel Pickwick is the founder and perpetual president of the Pickwick Club. The Plague (Vintage Classic Hardback Edition) by Albert Camus
- ISBN-: 978-8182475861
- Page-: 258
- Editon-: 2021
The Plague is an extraordinary classic that tells the story from the point of view of a narrator of a plague sweeping the French Algerian city of Oran. The narrator remains unknown until the start of the last chapter, chapter 5 of part 5. The novel presents a snapshot of life in Oran as seen through the author’s distinctive absurdist point of view. Camus used as source material the cholera epidemic that killed a large proportion of Oran’s population in 1849, but situated the novel in the 1940s. Oran and its surroundings were struck by disease several times before Camus published his novel. According to an academic study, Oran was decimated by the bubonic plague in 1556 and 1678, but all later outbreaks (in 1921 – 185 cases, 1931 – 76 cases, and 1944 – 95 cases) were very far from the scale of the epidemic described in the novel.

The Rainbow Trail by Zane Grey (HARDCOVER)
The novel takes place ten years after events of Riders of the Purple Sage. The wall to Surprise Valley has broken, and Jane Withersteen is forced to choose between Lassiter’s life and Fay Larkin’s marriage to a Mormon. Both novels are notable for their protagonists’ mild opposition to Mormon polygamy, but in The Rainbow Trail this theme is treated more explicitly. The plots of both books revolve around the victimization of women in the Mormon culture: events in Riders of the Purple Sage are centered on the struggle of a Mormon woman who sacrifices her wealth and social status to avoid becoming a junior wife of the head of a local church, while The Rainbow Trail contrasts the older Mormons with the rising generation of Mormon women who will not tolerate polygamy and Mormon men who do not seek it

The Talisman by Walter Scott (Hardback)
- Page : 376
- ISBN : 978-9394885882
- Dimensions : 22.5 x 14.5 x 2.3 cm
The main characters are the Scottish knight Kenneth, a fictional version of David of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon, who returned from the third Crusade in 1190; Richard the Lionheart; Saladin; and Edith Plantagenet, a relative of Richard. In Scott’s own words: “. . . the warlike character of Richard I, wild and generous, a pattern of chivalry, with all its extravagant virtues and its no less absurd errors, was opposed to that of Saladin, in which the Christian and English monarch showed all the cruelty and violence of an Eastern sultan, and Saladin, on the other hand, displayed the deep policy and prudence of a European sovereign, whilst each contended which should excel the other in the knightly qualities of bravery and generosity. This singular contrast afforded, as the author conceived, materials for a work of fiction possessing peculiar interest.”
