प्रेमचंद का जन्म 31 जुलाई 1880 को वाराणसी जिले (उत्तर प्रदेश) के लमही गाँव में एक कायस्थ परिवार में हुआ था। उनकी माता का नाम आनन्दी देवी तथा पिता का नाम मुंशी अजायबराय था जो लमही में डाकमुंशी थे। उनका वास्तविक नाम धनपत राय श्रीवास्तव था। प्रेमचंद (प्रेमचन्द) की आरम्भिक शिक्षा फ़ारसी में हुई। प्रेमचंद के माता-पिता के सम्बन्ध में रामविलास शर्मा लिखते हैं कि- “जब वे सात साल के थे, तभी उनकी माता का स्वर्गवास हो गया। जब पन्द्रह वर्ष के हुए तब उनका विवाह कर दिया गया और सोलह वर्ष के होने पर उनके पिता का भी देहान्त हो गया।” 1921 ई. में असहयोग आन्दोलन के दौरान महात्मा गाँधी के सरकारी नौकरी छोड़ने के आह्वान पर स्कूल इंस्पेक्टर पद से 23 जून को त्यागपत्र दे दिया। इसके बाद उन्होंने लेखन को अपना व्यवसाय बना लिया। मर्यादा, माधुरी आदि पत्रिकाओं में वे संपादक पद पर कार्यरत रहे। इसी दौरान उन्होंने प्रवासीलाल के साथ मिलकर सरस्वती प्रेस भी खरीदा तथा हंस और जागरण निकाला। प्रेस उनके लिए व्यावसायिक रूप से लाभप्रद सिद्ध नहीं हुआ। 1933 ई. में अपने ऋण को पटाने के लिए उन्होंने मोहनलाल भवनानी के सिनेटोन कम्पनी में कहानी लेखक के रूप में काम करने का प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर लिया। फिल्म नगरी प्रेमचंद को रास नहीं आई। वे एक वर्ष का अनुबन्ध भी पूरा नहीं कर सके और दो महीने का वेतन छोड़कर बनारस लौट आए। उनका स्वास्थ्य निरन्तर बिगड़ता गया। लम्बी बीमारी के बाद 8 अक्टूबर 1936 को उनका निधन हो गया।

प्रेमचंद (प्रेमचन्द) के साहित्यिक जीवन का आरंभ (आरम्भ) 1901 से हो चुका था आरंभ (आरम्भ) में वे नवाब राय के नाम से उर्दू में लिखते थे। प्रेमचंद की पहली रचना के संबंध में रामविलास शर्मा लिखते हैं कि- “प्रेमचंद की पहली रचना, जो अप्रकाशित ही रही, शायद उनका वह नाटक था जो उन्होंने अपने मामा जी के प्रेम और उस प्रेम के फलस्वरूप चमारों द्वारा उनकी पिटाई पर लिखा था। इसका जिक्र उन्होंने ‘पहली रचना’ नाम के अपने लेख में किया है। “उनका पहला उपलब्ध लेखन उर्दू उपन्यास ‘असरारे मआबिद’ है जो धारावाहिक रूप में प्रकाशित हुआ। इसका हिंदी रूपांतरण देवस्थान रहस्य नाम से हुआ। प्रेमचंद का दूसरा उपन्यास ‘हमखुर्मा व हमसवाब’ है जिसका हिंदी रूपांतरण ‘प्रेमा’ नाम से १९०७ में प्रकाशित हुआ। १९०८ ई. में उनका पहला कहानी संग्रह सोज़े-वतन प्रकाशित हुआ। देशभक्ति की भावना से ओतप्रोत इस संग्रह को अंग्रेज़ सरकार ने प्रतिबंधित कर दिया और इसकी सभी प्रतियाँ जब्त कर लीं और इसके लेखक नवाब राय को भविष्य में लेखन न करने की चेतावनी दी। इसके कारण उन्हें नाम बदलकर प्रेमचंद के नाम से लिखना पड़ा। उनका यह नाम दयानारायन निगम ने रखा था। ‘प्रेमचंद’ नाम से उनकी पहली कहानी बड़े घर की बेटी ज़माना पत्रिका के दिसम्बर १९१० के अंक में प्रकाशित हुई।

Rangbhoomi By Munshi Premchand (Hardcover)
Premchand was born on 31 July 1880 in a Kayastha family in Lamahi village of Varanasi district (Uttar Pradesh). His mother’s name was Anandi Devi and father’s name was Munshi Ajaybrai, who was a postman in Lamhi. His real name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastava. Premchand (Premchand) had his early education in Persian. In relation to Premchand’s parents, Ramvilas Sharma writes that- “When he was seven years old, his mother died. He was married when he was fifteen and his father died when he was sixteen years old. also passed away.”During the non-cooperation movement in 1921, on the call of Mahatma Gandhi to leave the government job, he resigned from the post of school inspector on 23rd June. After this he made writing his profession. He worked as an editor in magazines like Maryada, Madhuri etc. In the meantime, he along with Pravasilal also bought Saraswati Press and brought out Hans and Jagran. The press did not prove commercially profitable for him. In 1933, he accepted Mohanlal Bhavnani’s offer to work as a story writer in the Cinetone Company to settle his debts. Premchand did not like the film city. He could not complete even one year’s contract and left two months’ salary and returned to Banaras. His health continued to deteriorate.
