रवीन्द्र नाथ ठाकुर का उपन्यास ‘गोरा’, अंग्रेजी शासन में भारत की राष्ट्रीय चेतना का औपन्यासिक महाकाव्य है। यह उस कालखण्ड की रचना है, जब भारतीय समाज अपने जातीय गौरव से विछिन्न होकर या तो अपने कालचक्र के कारण या फिर पश्चिमी संस्कृति के प्रभाव में आकर राष्ट्रीय चेतना से कट-सा गया था। चूंकि अंग्रेजी शासकों की राजधानी बंगाल थी, इसीसे यह भाव वहां ज्यादा प्रखर था , और उसे ही प्रतीक रूप में स्वीकार कर तत्कालीन भारतीय सामाजिक- राजनीतिक स्थिति को ‘गोरा’ उपन्यास में बड़ी जीवन्तता के साथ उभारा गया है। भारतीय इतिहास के गंभीर अध्येता इस बात से अनभिज्ञ नहीं हैं कि जब अंग्रेजों ने भारतीय मन को पराजित करने के लिए ईसाइयत का प्रचार प्रारम्भ किया, तब उसका विरोध भी जमकर हुआ। आरम्भ में अवश्य ही ईसाई पादरियों को अपनी लक्ष्य-सिद्धि में असफलता लगी, लेकिन ई. १८१३ में, धर्म प्रचारकों पर से प्रतिबन्ध उठ जाने के बाद जिस तरह से ईसाइयत का प्रचार हिन्दू धर्म को खत्म करने के लिए हुआ, उसका उल्लेख इतिहास ग्रन्थों में बद्ध है। कैरी, डफ, विल्सन आदि के नेतृत्व में ईसाई धर्म हिन्दू धर्म पर बाज की तरह टूट पड़ा। और इसके लिए अंग्रेजों ने बंगाल के पढ़े-लिखे लोगों को अपनी ओर आकृष्ट करना प्रारंभ किया। अंग्रेजी शिक्षा के माध्यम से ईसाई धर्म का प्रचार सहज संभव हो गया । स्थिति को ही देखकर तब मेकाले ने कहा था- थोड़ी-सी ही पाश्चात्य शिक्षा से बंगाल में मूर्त्ति पूजने वाला कोई नहीं रह जायेगा और ई. १८३५ में ही बंगाल में ईसाइयत के प्रचार से खुश होकर चर्चों की एक सभा में डफ ने कहा था- यह अंग्रेजी, देश में जिस-जिस ओर बढ़ेगी, उस ओर हिन्दुत्व के अंग टूटते जायेंगे और एक दिन ऐसा भी होगा कि हिन्दुत्व पूरी तरह से पंगू हो जायेगा।
